October's Charity of the Month

In October, as proceeds from the H4H store went to: Arizona Adopt A Greyhound, Inc. www.arizonaadoptagreyhound.org

Arizona Adopt A Greyhound is one of the largest greyhound adoption agencies in the US, finding homes for 400-500 greyhounds each year, many who have raced at Phoenix Greyhound Park. With this track due to close later this year, the charity is working hard to rehome as many dogs as possible & really need our help to raise the necessary funds.

November's Charity of the Month

This month we are supporting Galgo Rescue International Network (GRIN).
GRIN's Mission: The Galgo Rescue International Network was founded to establish a relationship between the galgo shelters in Spain and animal lovers in the United States and around the world. Our love of greyhounds and concern for their plight drew us to their cousins - the Galgos.

Working closely with Spanish galgo shelters, G.R.I.N. raises awareness of the galgo's plight through international educational campaigns and fundraising. They also aid shelters and assists with adoptions for rehomed Galgos in the US.

Galgos are used for hunting in Spain, and are normally abandoned or killed at the end of hunting season. GRIN also helps other sighthound breeds in similar situations, such as the Podencos.

August's Charity

This month all proceeds, minus fees, will be donated to:

Second Chance Greyhounds

http://www.secondchancegreyhounds.org/

"Second Chance Greyhounds is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization that has formed a partnership with correctional facilities throughout the state of Georgia to foster and train former racing greyhounds to better prepare them for life as a treasured pet. In return for the good manners that they learn, the dogs provide an outlet for the inmates to practice patience, learn responsibility and allow these men and women the opportunity to experience unconditional love for the first time in many years. It’s a very special partnership that benefits both humans and greyhounds."

Featured Member: The Dog House

Hi, I’m Jane! I live in the countryside in South East Scotland with partner, Martin, my cat, Angie, & my 2 greyhounds, Max & Molly. Both dogs are ex-racers but are now very much enjoying their retirement, much of which seems to be spent on our sofas!

Inspired predominantly by greyhounds (in particular by my own 2 needle-noses), I make unique hand printed items, which I sell online in my Etsy shop, The Dog House, as well as at local craft fairs & events. I think the sleek lines & graceful (& at times not so graceful!) poses of greyhounds make striking prints.

After capturing the dogs on camera, I convert the original photographs to monochrome images which I then use to make screen prints. I like experimenting with bold colour combinations & captioning in my work. I donate 5% of the profits from each sale to Gracehounds, a small local charity run entirely by volunteers & dedicated to finding permanent homes & a better life for greyhounds & lurchers.

You can find out more about me, my dogs & my work on my blog, or follow me on twitter to catch my latest updates.

March & April Charity of the Month

The group of the month for March is:
Guam Greyhounds - working to rescue greyhounds in distress
http://www.guamgreyhounds.org

****PLEASE HELP GREYHOUNDS IN DISTRESS!*** THIS IS AN EMERGENCY! ***

Guam Greyhound Park closed in November 2008, releasing up to 150 dogs to an uncertain future. Guam Animals in Need (GAIN) and the Greyhound Protection League with the help of numerous rescue groups in the U.S. are working to relocate and find permanent homes for these dogs. Many have been helped so far, but many more are out there depending on you to help them avoid a cruel fate.

100% of the items in the H4H store will go to Guam Greyhounds. Pictured is one of the hounds they found after the track gave them away indiscriminately - please read their story on the Guam Greyhounds website.

Charity of the Month: February

Greyhound Pets of America - Arizona Chapter
www.gpa-az.com

GPA-AZ is an all-volunteer, 501(c)3 non-profit. They place dogs in the Phoenix area and northern AZ. They will accept any greyhound in need – not only from the track but from shelters and animal control too.

GPA-AZ recently formed a Tucson chapter to help the adopt greys from the Tucson dog track – where the dogs go at the end of their racing careers – the last stop. The dogs at the track drew lots of public attention when the conditions were featured on TV.

Mission Statement
“Our primary objective is to adopt Greyhound dogs into loving homes to give them a long and happy life. Secondly, we want to educate the public about Greyhounds, making them aware that Greyhounds make some of the best pets available. Finally, we are seeking like-minded individuals who can foster these dogs or volunteer their time or funds to help educate the public and aid our rescue mission.”

H4H to donate Greyhounds book

There is a greyt book by a Photographer named Barbara Karant called simply Greyhounds, that Claudia of the Greyhound Gang (one of our Charities of the Month) sent to H4H. We love the book, but we like to share, so we are donating it to a raffle benefitting the hounds. The book is lovely - pages and pages of adorable greyhounds. We recently found the photographer's Etsy site: ShopGreyhounds. Very cute stuff there too!

January's Charity of the Month

This month H4H is raising money for TLC Greyhound Adoption in Hutchinson, Kansas. Visit TLC at www.tlcgreyhoundadoption.com

In addition to regular fostering and adopting of greys, TLC has a unique program called the Kansas Correctional Facilities Greyhound Project. The inmates care for and teach obedience to the TLC greys housed in a kennel at their correctional facility. "The correctional facilities have found that the greyhounds are having positive changes on behavior and outlook, even among inmates not directly participating in the program."

How cool is that!

December's Charity of the Month

We raised $225 for Greyhound Ranch Adoptions! We were only 50-cents short of our $1000 goal for the year. This means 7 greyt charities received a check from H4H since we started in in May!

G.R.A.
is a non-profit Greyhound adoption organization located in Central Florida, and they rely on foster parents to shelter and rehabilitation the greys until just the right home is found. Visit their website at: greyhoundranch.org or see their available greys on Petfinder
